Snowmobile riders intent on experiencing winter's beauty and cold in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks got another reprieve this week. A federal judge in Wyoming blocked a ban imposed two months ago by a federal
judge in Washington. Although a bit late in the season for most, this weeks action increases the number of snowmobiles allowed in the parks by 70%. For now 780 snowmobiles will be permitted into Yellowstone and 140 into Grand Teton each day.
A complete ban originally went into effect at the end of the Clinton administration by order of the Park service. The Bush administration overturned this ban and enacted a compromise measure which should have
pleased both snowmobilers and conservationists. That order limited the number of users each day and mandated lower emission machines. Since then both sides have been at odds in federal court. Appears this debate is far from over.
Although have not visited either park in winter, would love to go and can't imagine how one would actually navigate this huge expanse of land without some form of transportation. |
